The Building

A quick history of bricks and mortar!

The Inn dates back to the 1800s, when it is believed the building was constructed in the middle of green fields as a manor house for a wealthy ship owner. It is believed to have been called Zion Manor and the cottages behind the pub still bear this name.

The front of the manor had a sloping garden now called The Lawn through which ran a pathway directly down to a quay by what is now the famous Bosuns Locker Chandlery. This is where the ship owner would dock his ships to load and unload. The cargo being carried up the hill to the storage sheds behind his manor house. Over time the manor was divided into two dwellings, Dolphin House and the current pub.

In the Victorian building boom a road was created along the front of the building connecting the Old School House further up the hill and the town outskirts via Wodehouse and Clare Terraces.

Uses and abuses through the ages

The Manor house was used as a hotel in the 1900s, and later a school when it was fitted with a traditional parquet wood flooring, now carpeted over, and legend has it the cellar sealed over, before becoming a pub.

It was probably the Redruth Brewery Devenish who developed its potential, but in the early days, although they had built on bay windows to the bar areas, the windows were made out of superb stained glass with scenes depicting the sea and local lighthouse. This was so the mostly men drinkers could not be seen from the road.

During a big refurbishment by Devenish the ground floor which was divided into a public bar and snug were opened up into one big room, the ceilings were fitted with false wood beams and lowered, the stained glass was removed and the tops of the leaded light windows blanked out. This was the traditional pub decor to bring down the light and the walls were all painted ochre like tobacco staining and the lower sections wood panelled. This produced a very smoky environment, which was then very acceptable. The upper floors were remodelled to give letting accommodation and a landlords flat The beer cellar, which used to be on the side of the building with an off sales side door, was incorporated into the bar and the cellar moved out the back into the yard.

More recent history

In the last year the Seaview has had another major refurbishment with new furnishings but still retaining the traditional pub feel. The bar is a large room with panoramic views over Falmouth estuary. In summer there is nowhere better to be than on the front terrace seating and enjoy the every changing scene of ships and boats moving about the harbour and the rivers. In winter the bar has an open fire and a cosy indoors feel.
